Infection

Something must have bitten me while I was pulling roots out of the ground on Sunday. I had an itchy bite on my ringfinger, and in the course of the day I realised there was a red line running from my finger to past my wrist. As it was my left arm and therefore that much closer to my heart, I thought I'd better have it looked at. The doctor thinks it will go away without the aid of antibiotics, although he's given me a prescription in case it starts 'lighting up in the dark'! The morale: buy some gardening gloves.

Digging

I reported a while ago on my acquisition of a plot of land here at the college. When I came back after Christmas, I thought I'd start giving it some TLC, and decided to dig it over. I thought I'd be able to do that in, oh, about an hour or so. I soon found that it was hard physical labour, and a slower job than I'd expected, especially with the soil consisting of very heavy wet clay.

So, after five weekends' worth of labour, having disturbed many a sleepy earthworm from its dark resting place (sorry about that, worms), and occasionally cutting the odd one in half (really sorry about that), this is what the plot looks like at the moment:

Still about a quarter to go, but it's coming along. It's worryingly full of roots, however - I'm hoping that they are not going to prove a hindrance to the beautiful planting plan I've produced:

I do find it really enjoyable. The digging is good exercise and nicely mind-clearing, and I am occasionally visited by a cheeky robin. The rosey scent of this nearby plant drifts in through the hedge:

I really hope it's going to be a success in terms of actually yielding some crop, but I'm already getting lots of enjoyment out of simply digging over my barren plot of land and fantasising about what it's going to look like.

Here are some other photos I took this lovely morning on my way to the plot and back. I've joined the Photographic Society at the college this week, so I was trying to be a little bit more active in the field of photography.

I like the pattern of lines in this one:

A nice bush by the recycling bins:

The theme for our next meeting is 'colour', so I was trying to capture some January colours:
